Academic Track

As part of our training services we are pleased to be able to offer two training tracks for those wishing to engage in a regular training programme:

The Centre for Continuing Development in Ministry

Course Directors: Rev Colin Buckland and Dr Nigel Wright

The Centre for Continuing Development in Ministry is a partnership with the Spurgeon’s College set up to offer in service training that is essentially practical and aimed at supporting ministers, stimulating personal growth and skill development. This course is of value to anybody involved in pastoral ministry. Concerns expressed by recent reports have highlighted two discernible trends in relation to ministry today:
  • The first pointed to the need for greater levels of support and for investment in the ongoing health of ministers.
  • The second to the need to take ministerial development seriously as a life-long process.
If you are looking for a course that will offer personal and professional development without the need to undertake formal postgraduate training, then look no further. If you have pastoral experience of at least three years and want to avoid the hazards of ministry, this course is designed especially for you. The following objectives for the course have been produced with you very much in mind:
  • Stimulating personal growth, skill development and imaginative ministry.
  • The opportunity to reflect on issues faced by serving ministers.
  • Assistance in exploring the resources available to ministers.
  • Alleviating the boredom or 'mid-ministry' factor.
  • Training ministers in skills related to recognized needs.
The course operates on a one-day a month basis for nine months of the year. It is delivered at Spurgeon's College on a Friday.

MA in Organizational Leadership

Our director Colin Buckland is Faculty in Residence for Western Europe for Azusa Pacific University, California, USA. In this role, Colin travels around the world teaching component parts of this Master's Degree. In conjunction with this degree Claybury International has been able to establish a Global Learning Site based in the UK, and Claybury operates the summer school within easy access to Central London.

This MA degree looks at a wide and comprehensive range of issues including:
  • Understanding ourselves better and thus performing more effectively as individuals/team
  • Appreciating issues relating to change, cross culture and ‘seeing the other point of view’
  • Collaborative working and ‘Servant Leadership’
  • Adult development and learning skills
  • The leader as counselor – dealing with crisis intervention – consultation skills etc.
The degree is a distanced learning programme which ‘kicks off’ each year with an annual summer school. It allows students to study at their own pace between periods of 3 to 7 years. There are a variety of modules to choose from – including some on line – and innovative ways in which students can apply what they have learnt from the modules at summer school back in their home environment as a means of completing course work. There are no exams, just a series of assignments and a final dissertation.
